Dry Ice Blasting in Norfolk...

Everything You Need to Know

Cryo Automotive is Norfolk's specialist dry ice blasting service, working with classic car owners, restorers and enthusiasts across the county. This page covers everything you need to know about dry ice blasting, what it is, how it works, what it can be used for, and why it's the best cleaning method available for classic and modern vehicles.

What Is Dry Ice Blasting?

Dry ice blasting is a specialist cleaning process that uses solid CO₂ pellets, accelerated at high speed using compressed air, to remove contaminants from surfaces. On impact the pellets sublimate, converting instantly from solid to gas, lifting rust, grease, carbon, old underseal and grime cleanly away without leaving any moisture, chemicals or secondary waste behind. The result is a clean, dry surface with no damage to the material underneath.

What Can Dry Ice Blasting Be Used For on a Vehicle?

Dry ice blasting is used across a wide range of automotive cleaning applications including chassis and underbody cleaning, engine bay cleaning, carbon deposit removal from engine components, stripping old or cracked underseal, cleaning suspension and drivetrain components, and preparation of bodywork and metalwork ahead of restoration. It is suitable for classic cars, modern vehicles, kit cars and specialist builds.

Why Is Dry Ice Blasting Better Than Traditional Cleaning Methods?

Unlike pressure washing, grit blasting or chemical degreasers, dry ice blasting leaves no moisture on the surface, causes zero abrasion to metal, uses no chemicals, produces no secondary waste and is completely safe to use around electrical components, rubber seals and wiring looms. For classic car restoration in particular it is the preferred method because it cleans without damaging original metal, trim or components, all whilst preserving the integrity of the vehicle and achieving results that no other method can match.

Is Dry Ice Blasting Safe for Classic Cars?

Yes. Dry ice blasting is widely regarded as the safest cleaning method available for classic vehicles. Because the CO₂ pellets sublimate on impact there is no abrasive action against the metal, no water ingress into joints or cavities and no chemical residue left on the surface. Original paintwork, chrome, rubber and wiring that needs to be preserved can be masked or avoided entirely. It is the method of choice for professional classic car restorers who cannot afford to damage irreplaceable original components.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does dry ice blasting take?

It depends on the area being cleaned and the level of contamination. A full underbody and chassis clean on a classic car typically takes between three and six hours. An engine bay clean can take between one and three hours. We will always give you a clear time estimate when you enquire so you can plan accordingly.

Do I need to do anything to prepare my vehicle before bringing it in?

No significant preparation is needed. If you have loose items stored in the vehicle it is worth removing them beforehand. If the car is a non-runner or on a trailer, just let us know in advance and we will make sure we are ready to receive it. We are used to working on part-stripped and mid-restoration vehicles.

Will dry ice blasting remove all rust?

Dry ice blasting is highly effective at removing surface rust, rust scale and rust-contaminated underseal or coatings. It will not repair metal that has rusted through or become structurally compromised, those areas will need repair after the clean. What it will do is give you a completely clear picture of the metal condition underneath, which is invaluable when assessing a restoration project.

Does dry ice blasting leave any residue?

No. The CO₂ pellets convert to gas on impact and leave nothing behind. The only material left after blasting is the displaced contaminant itself, rust flakes, old underseal, carbon deposits, which is swept away as part of the process. The surface is left clean and completely dry.

Is dry ice blasting environmentally friendly?

Yes. The process uses no chemicals, solvents or water. CO₂ is a naturally occurring gas and the amount used in dry ice blasting is minimal. There is no liquid waste to dispose of and no chemical runoff. It is one of the most environmentally responsible cleaning methods available.

How do I book and what information do you need?

Simply get in touch using the contact form or by calling us directly. It helps to know the make, model and year of the vehicle, which areas you need cleaned, and whether the car is a runner or needs to be trailered in. We will come back to you quickly with a quote and available dates.

Do you only serve Norfolk?

Our workshop is based in Norfolk and the majority of our customers are from across the county. However we regularly receive vehicles from north Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and beyond, particularly for classic car restoration projects where owners want a specialist they can trust.
